Land of the Troubles: Long Study Tour Week

Updated: Apr 13, 2019

On Sunday, March 3rd, my Communications and Conflict class packed our bags and headed to Ireland for our week-long study tour. Long study tour week is where each Core Course travels to a different country in Europe to meet with experts and visit sites related to the class. It’s an experiential learning focused week where you truly get to use Europe as your classroom and definitely something unique to studying abroad with DIS!

Throughout the semester my class has been learning about cultural conflicts in European countries such as Denmark, Sweden, the UK and Ireland. In Ireland, we actually got to stand on the grounds where Irish nationalism met British colonialism in the violent, ethno-nationalist conflict known as ‘the Troubles.’ We got to observe first-hand how the symbolic landscape of the city perpetuated divide between the two sides in Ireland’s biggest historical conflict. It was a very full week. We had a mix of academic visits such as lectures, walking tours and site visits as well as fun visits including a trip to the theater, a comedy club and Giant’s Causeway.

I could go on and on about what we did and how it was but I’d rather just show you… so enjoy the vlog I put together :)

Cheers to a great week in Ireland!
