In less than 24 hours...

…I will be in Copenhagen!

This morning was more stressful than I anticipated. My day started off at 4 a.m. as I sprung out of bed – in fight or flight mode - to the blaring of our security alarm. I ran to my parent’s room to wake up my dad, who was sound asleep and didn’t hear the alarm. Groggy and confused, he got up and went to turn it off.

False alarm.

It was likely due to the cold weather (it’s only 13 degrees in MN right now!) because sometimes ice cracking sounds like glass breaking, which sets off the alarm. After calming down, I fell back asleep, only to wake up two short hours later to get ready to leave.

Once I got to the airport, I ran into some problems. Not only was my bag too heavy (so I had to do the dreaded bag rearranging) but I also had to go to the special services desk to get everything squared away regarding my visa. Since I will be in Copenhagen for more than 90 days, I need to have a student visa. However, the visa is something we get once we arrive in Copenhagen. Thankfully, I printed out the papers that prove I am a study abroad student, so it was all good (note to future students: definitely print out all the papers DIS tells you to!!).

It’s a good thing I got to the airport early, because with all the fuss concerning my bag and visa, checking in took longer than expected. I had TSA pre-check (which I highly recommend!!) so I zipped through security. The regular line was the longest I’ve ever seen, so it's questionable whether or not I would’ve made my flight if I hadn't had TSA pre-check.

I am now sitting aboard my first flight (PHEW!), en route to JFK, after (somewhat successfully) packing my bags, kissing my dogs goodbye (😭) and surviving a stressful airport experience.

Once I arrive in Copenhagen, my first task is to figure out the metro so I can get to Nørreport Station to meet my friend Caroline. I am arriving a day early, so I will be spending the night in a hotel with Caroline and her mom (a huge thank you to them both for helping me out!!). The next day, I will go to my home for the next 4 months – the Outdoor Living & Learning Community – where I will meet the people I’m living with and take a short tour so we know the basics such as how to use the metro, how to get to DIS and how to find food.

Cheers to finally being on my way!
