Hej! Happy Friday! Happy February!
One of the things I vowed to make more time for this year is food. So, to hold myself accountable AANNNDD to have an outlet to share all the delicious food I'm learning about, making and eating while abroad, I am going to do Foodie Friday every couple weeks here on my blog.
FOOD HIGHLIGHTS THE PAST COUPLE WEEKS . . .
Anthropology of Food
If you read my introduction post or follow my Copenhagen instagram account, you would know that I'm taking a course called Anthropology of Food here at DIS. And let me tell you... coolest. class. ever. Today we went to Torvehallerne (also known as the glass market) and learned about various French cheeses at Ma Poule. The cheese that my group researched and presented to the class is called Mimolette. It's actually banned in the U.S. because it often has cheese mites in it and the FDA declared it a health hazard and potential allergen. But it is legal and approved in Denmark and I didn't have an allergic reaction or see any mites ;)
After class I also ordered their classic duck sandwich for lunch, called le "confit de canard." It was delicious.
Also, the other day we had a guest observer sit in our class and she brought us some Danish pastries, also known as "spandauer." I tried all three kinds - chocolate, cinnamon and almond. The almond was my favorite.
Wednesday Snails
There's a bakery right by DIS called Sankt Peders Bageri. Every Wednesday they sell pastries called Onsdagsnegles ("Wednesday snails") for only 18 kroner (about $2.75). Needless to say, it has become a tradition to indulge every Wednesday.
Cooking
Cooking has already been a huge part of my experience abroad. Given the (expensive!!) cost of living in Copenhagen, it is necessary to pack my own lunches and cook the majority of my meals. I'm also very happy to have a kitchen because it's something I didn't have at Elon last semester.
And it has been really fun cooking with my apartment! Last weekend we made paella together and all had a family dinner :)
My roommate Twlya and I also teamed up to explore our local Asian market and make pho the other night.
Brunch
Brunch is my favorite meal. Hands down. So, I went to a couple of the brunch places my friends recommended and they were incredible. The first one was Grød, a place known for its porridge. I ordered their classic: oat porridge with apples, dulce de leche caramel and toasted almonds.
The second place I went to was Mad & Kaffe. They have a lovely brunch menu where you can order 3, 5 or 7 small plates and they serve it to you on a wooden board. The place also had major hygge.. big bonus. I will definitely be back.
Cheers to learning about, making and eating plenty of new foods!
